Bruce Gourlay began his
professional career in music in 1952 playing in dance and cabaret bands.
Since then he has become on of Tasmania's (and Australia's) most highly
regarded Jazz Piano player and teacher. He has recorded with various Jazz
Groups including the great Bob Barnard. He became a life member of the
Launceston Jazz Club in 1994 and received the Satchmo Award at the Inaugural
Presentation by the Suncoast Jazz Club for his contribution to Tasmanian
Jazz. When listening to Bruce there are traces of the piano greats Teddy
Wilson, Dave McKenna, Errol Garner, Jelly Roll Morton and even Art Tatum.
Bruce is a two handed piano player, his left hand is as dominant as his
right, both darting in and out of the melodic or improvised line with ease.
Bruce was a great delight with the audience at last year's festival and we
welcome him back once again. |
